Show 5085 F. Johnson- RD 3097 BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Mr. Johnson, does the Colorado river there at Lees Ferry at certain times of the year carry considerable driftwood A Yes sir. Q What is the character of that wood as to size? A Anything from trees about six to eight feet through, some of the bigger ones, from that down to just very small; all sizes. Q What kind of wood? A All kinds of wood; mostly cottonwood, boxelder, willow, some pinon cedar. Once in a while there is plank, big sawed timber, bridge timber. Q Do you recall whether or not Spencer used any wood in connection with the operation of his dredge? A Yes sir, he used wood almost entirely. Just below the ferry there is big gravel bar spreads out in the river at times between three- quarters and a mile wide. On this bar is a lot of wood. He would clean this bar out every time the river would raise, while he was in there, take practically all the wood that was of any value, haul it to his barges for fuel. MR. BLACKMAR: That is all. |
