Show 5233 Newby- D 3245 anyhow. Q What particular service did you perform on the boat on your way down? A Well, I was supposed to be handy man, I guess, more than anything else. I did different errands around the boat, whatever was needed to be done, coiling up rope, making fast ashore when we made a landing, taking soundings of the river as we went down, and so on, taking lines ashore. Q For what purpose did you take lines ashore? A When we got stuck so hard, we thought we couldn't work our way off, we took a line ashore, make fast to something, and wind off with the capstan. Q You carried that equipment with you? A Yes sir. Q How did make those soundings which you spoke of? A Well, we started to make them with what we call a lead line, with a weight on the and of a rope. Q Where were you stationed on the extreme bow, right out as far forward as I could get. Q And then afterwards how did you make those soundings? A Why, it became so monotomous with this lead line I abandoned that and took a pipe pole, used that in place of a lead line. Q Do you recall the depth of water which you found?
