Show 5171 F. Bennett- D 3183 up any further than the Good Hope bar; I got up as far as the Good Hope bar with it. Q About how many miles is that? A About sixteen miles, -- no, about fourteen miles that was, from the Olympia. Q then what happened to that boat? A Well, I couldn't run up the Good Hope rapids with it, I had a stern wheel on it. My sprocket chain broke first, and let me back down, and I tried it a number of times; then I got it up to the top of the rapids; I couldn't go any further, didn't have power enough. Eventually broke the sprocket chain, and it went into the river, and I lost it. So it was out off from that. Q About what point in the river are these rapids you refer to as Good Hope rapids? A They are at the Good Hope bar, about eighteen miles below Hite: they are not a very swift rapid, but quite a rapid there. Q Did you have a paddle wheel on this boat? A I had a paddle wheel at one time; then I tried side wheel on it. I had a stern wheel on; then I had on side wheels, tried that. Q Did you have any better luck with the side wheel? A No, I didn't have hardly as good luck. You try to hug the shore as near as you can, on account of swift water |
