Show 5234 Newby- D 3246 close, and other places I couldn't, because there wasn't any water. Q Give me your best recollection of the depths that you found. A Well, when I took the pipe pole I would sit on the bow, keep working the pole, touching bottom, and as the bottom got further away of course the pole would go deeper; as I found the bottom more shallow, keep raising the pole up, hitting bottom every time, you understand. After while it would be almost to the too of the water. The depth varied so frequently that we had to take almost continuous soundings, to keep from hitting these sandbars more frequently than we did. Q When you reached Valentine bottom, why did you turn around and come back? A Why? Q Yes. A Why, Mr. Anderson and Mr. Yokey thought it would not be feasible -- MR. FARNSWORTH: Never mind. THE SPECIAL MASTER: Do you know personally why you came back? MR. FARNSWORTH: That may go out, I assume, what the other men thought? THE SPECIAL MASTER: That can go out. A You want to know why I thought we turned around? |
