Show 5180 F. Bennett- D 3192 A It was about a mile and a half above Good Hope; I was hauling rock there at the time with a team, and I heard someone and I went up on the hill. I could see them standing up in the boat. Getting pretty near dark. I took one horse out of the team. I knew some one was in difficulty. The deeper all the time. Gorge in there. When I got up there, Mr. Hite and Timothy O'Keefe and naturally, confining it made it swifter; ran down in a little " V" in the ice. They couldn't go any further. They were standing up in their boat trying to guide this ice away. Their boat was pretty well loaded. They throwed me out a line, throwed it several times before they could reach me. I ran out on the ice and got hold of the line and we began towing the boat. Their boat was going down, the bow up- stream, it was backing down through there. They tried to row up; they couldn't row in this ice gorge. So I got a hold of this line; I had quite a time getting them back up there. Tied the rope around and pulled on it as hard as I could, and got them back up where I could get them in to the shore. They came in to the shore. They tied up the boat there, and left it until the ice gorge went out. |
