Show 5229 F. Bennett- 3241 the spring of 1899, when Mr. Stanton was building that dredge and building roads, and so on, I would say there was in the neighborhood of seventy- five of one hundred men along that river at one time. Made a little stir, -- and people placer mining. Q What were they living in? A Most of them living in tents. Q Did the Stanton Company bring in the supplies for them? A No, only for their own outfit. The majority of the men were working for them. Q Since then, since 1898, on an average how many men would you say had been working each year on that stretch,-- two, or three, or half a dozen, or twenty? A For a long while our post office -- there was twelve men there, and they got their mail there, most every one got their mail there that was on the river. Q How did they live, in huts or houses? A some of them lived in little houses, that is, dug- outs, and then some of them lived in tents. We made one house out of willows, and plastered it. THE SPECIAL MASTER: That is all. Mr. Bennett, you have had a very interesting life. |
