I was there off and on; I would go there for a few months and run the ferry; my brother and I ran the ferry. He would take it a while, then I would go and take it. Q Prior to 1896 did you assist your father in the operation of the ferry? A Yes sir, ever since I can remember. Q Just tell us, please, the conditions of the water in and around Lees Ferry with reference to width and depth. A Well, prior to 1896 I don't remember so very much about the water, on account of being so young; my father never would allow us to go in the river to swim or anything of that kind. All I remember is working with him. And we would in those days run the ferry boat with a long sweep, one on each side, and usually one at the rear end to steer the boat, to hold it straight with the current; that is, the current ran the boat. Had to hold it at a certain angle in order to take the boat across. And my job was usually to get hold of a rope and tow the boat up the stream.
