Show 5199 F. Bennett- D 3211 BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q In bringing this heavy material down the stream, what stage of the water did you usually select to bring it down? A When I brought it down the river, that Keystone drill, it was in -- I think it was in November or December; we brought it down on the raft and in our boat together; a small rig, weighing, I suppose, three or four tons. Build a raft and brought it down. Mr. Chaffin helped to bring it down, and a man named West, I think his name was. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q How did you bring it up? A I took it up in a boat, took it up the river, I and Mr. Bert Loper and a man named W. S. Hay. Q What kind of boat did you take it up in? A It was all dismantled. We took it in three trips, made three trips as far as Olympia. Made only two from there on up. We went up with a sail. Had this big boat. The river was raising quite fast. Got up seven or eight or ten feet above low water mark -- eight feet, anyway. We put up a big canvas, went up with that sail. Some days we would lay around for a day or two days. When we would get wind, we would go. I think it was only about a day and a half making the trip, actual traveling time. |
