Show 5182 F. Bennett- D 3194 they extend across the river? A They go clear across, those gorges. Whenever they gorge, the entire river is closed off. Q What effect does that have on the water behind it? A It backs it up. It will pile up until it breaks, keeps raising all the time. Ice will form down under and on top. It obstructs the flow of the river and keeps on backing up. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q That is what you usually call an ice jam, I think? A Yes, an ice jam. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Was there any special place on the river as you saw it there where these ice dams accumulated? A Yes, they are more apt to accumulate where the water is still, below these rapids. When you get down, pretty well down towards another rapid, be more or less still water. Begins to swell before they start in the rapids; the rapids are caused by the river being narrower; where it is wider, it will freeze over quicker. The ice will stop there, hasn't got the velocity, certain places, most every year, or a number of years I was there. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Would that be in the winter months, or in the spring when the ice was breaking up? |
