Quand la meme personne veut exprimer ses craintes ou tout ce que Pceil ne peut apercevoir, elle montre d'abord les attitudes particulieres qui sont produites par ces sentimens. I 49 Apres avoir reprdsentd ces signes exteYieurs qui accompagnent les affections, le sauvage, comme une personne sourde et muette, se sert de la ressemblance qu'il trouve entre les sensations inte'rieurcs de l'ame et les qualite's exte'rieures des corps, employant les premieres pour exprimer les dernieres. Ainsi, la colere violcnte est compare'e a la flamme ou a la tempete; la tranquillite d'ftme a un ciel serein; le doute s'exprime par les deux mains qui peseraient deux corps: ces signes s'aypellentfiguralifs et symbol iques.
