Show 167 responsibilities as Assistant Commissioner included the administration of all student loans. When his father learned of this important financial responsibility, he couldn't sleep until he was informed that Harden could not be held personally responsible for things like defaulted loans. Harden, too, has been faithful in the Church and has held responsible Church positions including two appointments as Bishop.22 The achievements of his sons have brought Henry Eyring immense sat- isfaction. One of the proudest moments for Eyring and his wife, Mildred, came in l968 when all three sons were serving as Bishops at the same time. The youngest, Harden, was Bishop of the Bay Ward in San Francisco, where he was involved with the building of a new chapel. Hal was Bishop of the Stanford Hard at Stanford, where he presided over members from the local area and LDS students at the University. Ted was Bishop of the -Holiday 25th Ward in southeast Salt Lake City. Eyring's influence was felt beyond the bounds of his own immediate family and when his father died in l957, as oldest son, he was given the role of family patriarch by his brothers and sisters. He accepted that role and has been the catalyst in keeping both of his father's families together. The family, in turn, appreciated the great love he had for them and to show their deep respect for him, they organized a special family gathering to honor him. Under the chairmanship of his oldest sister, Camilla, the Monument Park Chapel was reserved for November 25, l966, and Eyring's brothers and sisters met to praise him for his great accomplishments, his unquestioned faith in God and for the great honor he had brought to the Eyring name.23 The family has continued to meet on almost an annual basis to get reacquainted and to discuss family projects such as the writing of their father's biography. |
