Show 88 varying amounts and time periods. For each of these grants, he made every effort to return to granting agencies useful fundamental research results. The large number of long term grants awarded indicate that the granting agencies were pleased with his work. An interesting illustrative example is the research grants awarded to Eyring by the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) from l957 to l96l. The research program of the NLGI required a school with four important qualifications: l) a qualified and interested professor, 2) a well equipped laboratory, 3) a school capable of attracting good Ph.D. students, and 4) time to develop understanding of the complexities of lubricating greases.H Utah was one of the few places in the United States that met all the qualifications of the NLGI program. It had acquired the right equipment for this and other types of laboratory studies, and Eyring gave the school the leadership and interest to meet the other qualifications. His previous work in liquid theory provided an excellent background to begin studies on greases. He and his co- workers contributed six major papers to the NLGI Spokesman detailing their research.12 Several appraisals and a general review of the NLGI research program was presented at their annual meeting in October, l963. In this report the research committee of NLGI said of Utah's work: "As an example of the repute of this work, it may be pointed out that several of these articles from the Spokesman are studied and referenced widely in current military research projects on space age lubrication problems. They have also attracted attention abroad and have enhanced our society's reputation."13 Eyring's interests in research went beyond just the laboratories at the University of Utah. He encouraged the development of resources for |
