Show CHAPTER II EYRING'S UNIVERSITY TRAINING - THE MAKING OF A PHYSICAL CHEMIST Eyring was officially admitted to the University of Arizona on September l0, l9l9 with mining engineering as a major. His first day on campus was memorable because he met and conversed with the University's President, Rufus van Kleinschmidt, as he was driving through the campus in his carriage drawn by two well matched black horses. University life presented the new freshman some problems. As a member of that class he was subjected to the usual initiation pranks, foolishness he did not care for. To begin with some sophomores cut a strip down the center of his hair and announced a requirement that all freshmen must wear a green "benie" cap. Eyring thought the whole busi- ness was ridiculous and decided that he wouldn't wear his. When he left class his plan was to race to the dormitories where such hazing was not allowed. He did outrun his tormentors to the dorm, but they continued in after him and followed him to his room where he thought he would yet be safe since he had them locked out. The sophomores, more determined than expected, tried to enter his room through the door‘s transom, but Eyring prevented this by rapping their hands with a broom handle. didn't come out. The mob then threatened to break down his door if he Fearing the expense of a broken door, he surrendered. Within seconds they had him stretched out face down in mid-air with several boys at each leg and arm and one boy gladly swinging a paddle |
