Show l4] Eyring's influence and the importance of his work went beyond the boundaries of the Intermountain Nest and even beyond the borders of the United States. Besides the acclaim he was given in Korea in l963 and l974, he and his scientific work have attained wide recognition through- out the scientific world. In 1968, he was invited to become an Honorary Fellow of the London Chemical Society. The honor is awarded only to chemists "whose distinction in the science of Chemistry has earned an international reputation."30 Similar honors were accorded him by the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science in l969 and the Deutche Akademie der Naturforscher in l975. In l978, the University of Paris (Orsay) bestowed an honorary doctorate upon Eyring. On his visit to France, he participated in a symposium held in his honor before the Société de Chimie Physique.3] The most distinguished foreign honor for Eyring came from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in l979. He was invited by the Academy, which also selects Nobel prize winners, to speak before the Academy and to receive the Berzelius Medal as part of their celebration of Berzelius' birth (the 200th anniversary). Jakob Berzelius (l779-1848), one of Sweden's greatest chemists, served as Secretary General of the Swedish Academy for thirty years (l8l8-l848) and made notable contributions to the foundations of modern chemistry.32 King Gustaf of Sweden presented the infrequently given solid gold medal to Eyring in ceremonies before the Swedish Academy on November 23, I979. Eyring became the tenth chemist to receive the distinguished award.33 Perhaps the only major award or honor that has eluded Eyring is the Nobel Prize itself. There are many who feel that he deserves the award, and he has been nominated on many occasions since l949.34 If such |
