Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

The ( San Sail ) ( Jnaii Juan ) River carries a great deal of silt and ( sand saud ) . To his knowledge the ( Indians Iudians ) have not used boats on the river and he has never known of any , navigation on the ( San Sail ) Juan River except ( ferrying ferrying" ferrying ) ( R . 537-540 . ) ( Cross-exwnination Crossexwnination Cross-exmination Crossexmination ) ( R . Vol . 3 , pp . 540 ) : Ferry boats carry freight and passengers ( dur dur- dur ) ing the ( high-water highwater ) season . ( R . 450 . ) ( PABLEY PARLEY ) ( BOGEBSON ROGERSON ) BUTT For Complainant ( Record vol 3 , pp . ( 541-5G5 5415G5 541-565 ) ) He resides at Dove Creek . He is 69 years of age ( arid and ) is a farmer and stock raiser ; ( he lie ) has been familiar with the San ( Juan Juall ) River for thirty years . He lived in the San Juan country at Bluff , Utah , up until six years ago , when ( he lie ) moved into ( Colo Colo- Colo ) ¬ rado . He came into the ( San Sail ) Juan country from Iron County , Utah , in 1879 , with ( Kiunen Kumen ) Jones and party . ( R . 541-542 . ) They commenced ( pre- pre ) ( paring parilig ) land for crops and cultivated farms . In 1894 the flood waters of the ( San Sail ) Juan River washed most of the farm ( lands lauds ) away . They had spent hundreds of dollars to get the cottonwoods away for cultivation . He attempted to save lands by building riprap dykes along the river and filling in ( behind behiud ) riprap with rocks . The riprapping was complete when the high waters came . ( R . 543-544 . ) |
