Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

( R . 1711-1712 . ) Stuck several times a day and men got out ( andl and ) pushed boat off . ( R . 1712-1713 . ) In going through Cataract Canyon when ( come1 come ) to a rapid wouldwalk down along bank and picked out the channel ; one boat went through all right , others followed at intervals of 15 minutes where safe ; portaged Dark Canyon Rapid ; running ( rap- rap ) ids just boatmen went with boat , party walked around ; cockpit filled from six inches up to being . full running rapids . ( R . 1713-1715 . ) Two boats . struck rocks and were damaged , repaired ; run . boats sterns first . ( R . ( 1715-1716 1715-4716 ) . ) From the cataracts down to Lees Ferry had ( dif-- dif ) ficulties running onto ( bars-gravel barsgravel ) bars where ( there here ) was shallow water ; one or two boats ( hung hung- hung ) up ; had difficulties with ( whirlpools -whirlpools whirlpools ) , which ( would -would would ) catch boat and turn it ; difficult to hold or get boat out of whirlpools . ( R . 1717 . ) Did not encounter rapids , but riffle in Glen . Canyon ; he calls them riffles where the ( water -14y"ater 14yater ) is going over shallow place , not very swift . In a rapid the water is very swift , river has a drop , full of large boulders .
