Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show Hellas ( never nevelr ) ( transported trai-Lsported traiLsported ) 261 ( any ally ) freight ( in ill ) ( the file ) scow ( from J'ronj Jronj ) Moab to ( Greenriver Greeniiver ) , ( TItali Utah ) . The scow ( has lias ) never been below Lockhart Canyon on ( tlie the ) Colorado River , a distance of forty miles ( from froin ) the Moab dock . He has been stuck ( on oil ) sand bars ( in ill ) the Colorado River a great number of ( times thnes ) but has never been , held ( up iip ) for any great length of ( time tinie ) . The sand bars in his opinion are generally found in about the same place in the river and except occasionally can be avoided . ( He Ile ) recalls the boat known as ( Undine Uiuti-ae Uiutiae ) , but was not ( financially filiancially ) interested in it . The ( Undine Midine ) was sixty feet ( long- long long ) , round ( bottom bottoin ) , with ( steam steain ) power . He ( doesn't doesnt ) know the draft of the boat but recollects it ( as its ) ( being beffig ) about eighteen ( inches hiclies ) . He saw the boat twice at ( Moab TMoab ) but ( doesn't doesnt loesn't loesnt ) know whether the boat made ( one oue ) trip or two . He ( wasn't wasnt wasil't wasilt ) particularly interested ( in iii ) it . , On a trip started up the river from ( Moab Koab ) to Cisco ( in ill ) 1889 or 1900 , the boat got as far as Nigger Bill riffle , where it got sideways of the ( stream sti-cain sticain ) ( and --and and ) ( turned turlied ) ( OATer over ) . For a ( long loilg ) ( time tinie ) the boat was on the rocks ( and -ilid ilid ) ( couldn't couldnt ) get away but lie ( hasn't hasnt liasn't liasnt ) seen it in the last two or ( three fliree ) years . Nigger Bill Creek is about four ( miles iiiiles ) above ( Moab 2vLoal ) . ( He Ile ) was not on the boat ( when wben ) it was wrecked but saw it about a ( month inonth ) ( afterward a-fterward afterward ) .
