Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show surveyed ( tbat'whole tbatwhole ) country 194 out there for oil ( per- per ) ( mits inits ) . That is about forty miles east of the mouth ofthe ( Sail San ) ( Juan Jutm ) . ( R . 704-705 . ) ( Cross-examination Crossexamination ) ( R . Vol . 4 , pp . 705-719 ) : In 1893 he freighted drilling machine and placer machines into Bluff and lumber down on below Bluff . The material was obtained at ( Mancos 'Mancos Mancos ) , ( Colo Colo- Colo ) ¬ rado , the drilling machine being left at Bluff and lumber ( taken talzen ) on down to ( Zahn's Zahns Zalli-i's Zalliis ) Camp at the mouth of Nokai Canyon , about ( seventy-five seventyfive ) miies ( west -Nvest Nvest ) of Bluff on the San Juan River . There was no road from the mouth of Comb Wash , where ( he lie ) crossed the river , to ( Zahn's Zahns ) Camp ; he merely took the freight across country and constructed his own road where it became necessary . ( R . 705-708 . ) Road there was not good ; rough country ; went by way of Bluff ; made own road when had to ; ( didn't didnt ) build a road clear through there ; went across the country . When got to Moonlight going into Copper ( Canyon Cai-iyon Caiiyon ) , had to build a couple of grades , something like that ; ( didn't didnt ) build a road all the way down there . Followed a road to Bluff City . From Bluff City followed a road to Comb Wash ; after they had crossed the river at mouth of Comb Wash . Were on south side of river . Followed Indian trails most of the ( time thue ) . Not following a road . ( R . 708-710 . ) ( Difference Differelice ) ( be- be ) ( tween tweeu ) Indian trail ( and aud ) a road is this : An Indian trail ( is- is ) where ( Indians Indiaus ) have got to work at a place to go through horseback . |
