There ( -was was ) also a good deal of swift water between ( Green- Green ) river , Utah , and the mouth of the San ( Eafael Rafael ) . When the boats hit a sand bar they would ( some- some ) times have to get out and pull the boat over , and others where the bars were not filled with coarse gravel , they could rock the boat ( from froin ) side to side , in that way loosen the mud up , the current would take it away , and finally the boat would float off . They possibly grounded one or two ( times tinies ) from Labyrinth Canyon to the region of the cataracts , ( 'but but ) not very ( much niuch ) ; the groundings and things of that kind being just incidents , and all in the ( day's days ) ( work -work work ) . ( ( E R ) . 1782-1783 . ) The boats did not have rudders ; they were flat ( "bottomed bottomed bottomed ) , with a skag that could be detached , and in the more quiescent parts of the river we put on that skag to keep the boat from swinging too much , then we took that off in the swifter parts . This skag lie refers to is a keel that projects from . the ( underside -underside underside ) of the boat down into the river , covering the lowest half of the boat , the rear , the stern . That was bolted ( on oil ) so they could detach that . It would be ( dangerous dancrerous ) to try to run ( rapids-they rapidsthey ) practically went down stern first ( in ill ) all the ( rapids- rapids ) they ( couldn't couldnt ) have done that with that skag on , so we detached that in the swift parts of the river ( and aud ) put it back on ill the more quiescent ( parts partsq ) , so 33 i 07-31 ( --VOL VOL ) . . 1-33 |
