When got to the mouth of the Green River ( pro- pro ) ceeded to go up what they called the Grand River at that time ( it is now the Colorado River ) , up to Moab , and felt pretty good about it ( imtil until ) had gone some three or four miles , when encountered a big slide in the Grand River that the boat ( wasn't wasnt ) ( ca- ca ) pable of making at all , but was foolish enough to go into this slide where the water was pouring over , and the first thing they knew , the boat was headed down the river , just turned right around ; got into a big whirlpool where there were a great many trees and different size timbers in this whirlpool , got into that , it turned them around ; turned them around at least once , not sure but more ; finally got out of this whirlpool and went into the bank , into the . rocks with the ( bow bmi ) of the boat ; that was on the bank of the river . ( R . 668-670 . ) They were fortunate enough to get ( ofO off ) the boat and ( tie tic ) it up there , and so stayed there ; not sure that they stayed all day , but stayed there quite a while , and tried to ( figure fignire ) out some plan whereby might get up to Moab , but the more he thought about it the more he said they ( couldn't couldnt ) make any headway trying to get over that slide in the Grand River . It was impossible , so far as they were ( con- con ) cerned , with their equipment ; might have ( had bad ) winches put on the banks and snubbed the boat and wound it up this place , but ( didn't didnt ) have those things , |
