Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show As you get down into 304 the vicinity of Greenriver , Utah ) the boating conditions do not get better ; have more sand bars down further . ( R . 1142-1143 . ) ( Prom From ) Greenriver through Labyrinth to ( Still- Still ) water Canyons there ( aren't arent ) the dangers of rough water that occur in Westwater Canyon on the ( Colo- Colo ) rado . In travelling upstream with a rowboat ( fre- fre ) quently it is much easier to get out and tow the boat than it is to row . ( R . 1143 . ) He has always avoided going up stream as much as possible with a rowboat . ( R . 1143 . ) When ( rowing Towing ) upstream he attempted to keep in the quiet water as much as possible and to keep away from the swift current and in doing that ( he be ) boated in the shallower . portions of the river . ( R . ( 1143-1144 1143--1144 ) . ) Some of these bars cross clean across the river ; it is very hard to find a channel through , anywhere . ( R . 1144 . ) But when rowing up stream , and seeking the quieter water , over where it is more shallow , boat much more frequently touches ground of necessity . ( R . 1145-1145 . ) . On the Eddy expedition no one besides himself had had previous experience ( with -with with ) boats , or with the river and therefore encountered quite a bit more trouble than ( would -would would ) otherwise have been encountered . As a boy , he made many trips with his father , but only the one trip spoken of on the Green and Colorado Rivers to Lees Ferry . |
