He first became interested in the Colorado River after reading a copy of Major ( Powell's Powells ) book , ( "The The ) Colorado River of the West . 57 [ Compl . Exhibit No . 51 . ] A picture in this book , ( showing -showing showing ) the ( wreck wrec'k wreck ) of a boat at Disaster Falls , in Lodore Canyon , interested him very much and he ( wondered -wondered wondered ) if it were possible for people to go ( through -through through ) places like that and live . His first view of the Colorado River ( was -was was ) from the Blue Mountains in Colorado in 1878 . His first close view of the Colorado was in the year 1897 or 1898 , when he went from ( Greeiiriver Greenriver ) Station , Utah , by the way of Hanksville , Utah , to a point in Glen Canyon on the Colorado River , where Mr . Stanton was engaged in locating placer mining claims . He unfortunately ( -was was ) interested in the Stanton enterprise , as a ( stock- stock ) ( holder -holder holder ) . Stanton for several years ( be- be ) fore that time and ( had liad ) become somewhat ( inter- inter ) , ested in the placer deposits that Stanton claimed existed in Glen ( Canyon Caiiyon ) .
