Show pack mule in charge of Major 430 Powell himself , who came from Manti , Utah , with two men from ( Kanab Kaiiab ) , named Fred and Lyman Hamblin . These two men had been utilized by Major Powell on other ( occa occa- occa ) ¬ sions for transporting supplies and they had ( abso abso- abso ) ¬ lutely no knowledge of the regions nor did they own any boats . ( R . 1523 . ) One of these Hamblins made a short trip with him ; he got on the boat They camped a little below where we met Powell Powell came up on the west side of the river two or three miles from where he had camped to where ? they had camped , and one of the Hamblins came with him , and they took him on the boat to take him | down to their camp , and there were some riffles in between ; he was quite startled at going through this terrible ( water -water water ) . He stated that there are no rapids in that region ; just swift water with riffles that they might be called rapids elsewhere but in comparison with the rapids which he had seen * above that they ( didn't didnt ) amount to much in this ( par- par ) ticular stretch of the river .
