Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show good country and the Colorado ( 104 1.04 ) River there is a lot that will ngver be farmed , he believes . San Juan county is a large county ; ( one-ninth oneninth ) of the state ( and aild ) the part that is suitable to the ( develop denrelop- denrelop ) ment of grain is near the Colorado [ State ] line ; - all along there for twenty or ( twenty-five twentyfive ) miles wide and is located east and north of Bluff . There ( are- are are ) large sections of excellent grazing land there . ( R . 380 . ) He does not believe there are sections of land right up to the Colorado River that are much good for anything . ( R . 380 . ) He has not been ( up np ) and down the ( Colorado Colondo ) River between its confluence with the Green and its ( con- con ) fluence with the San Juan Rivers . He has only crossed it in every ( way -NNay NNay ) he could between Moab and Lees Ferry ( but Nit ) has never navigated it either up or , down and has never lived close to the river . ( R . 381 . ) He has lived in ( Blaxidiug Blanding ) for ten years and ( prior prior- prior ) to that ( he lie ) lived in Bluff for over forty years . In . his fifty years experience , he believes , that he has crossed the San Juan River below Bluff hundreds of ( times thiles ) , principally near Bluff and where the canyon boxes up . ( R . 382 . ) From a point fifteen miles down the river below Bluff to the confluence of the San Juan and the . Colorado Rivers he has crossed the San ( Juan Juan- Juan ) River nearly every place he could get to the river on horseback . He was in the country looking after cattle and ( trading tradhig ) with the ( Indians Indiaiis ) . |
