Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show According ( to'his tohis ) ( recollection recollectioii ) 275 there ( wore were ) ( throe three ) or four ( wells Nvells ) drilled on Gibson ( Dome Doine ) in the ( neighbor neighbor- neighbor ) ( hood bood ) of Indian Creek , about thirty miles south air ( line Iine ) ( from froni ) ( Moab ATIoab ) , Utah , and about ten or fifteen ( miles iniles ) cast from the Colorado River . ( ( B R ) . ( 101O 1010t- 1010t ) 1012 ) . ( Coinpl Compl ) . ( Exh Exb ) . ( 123 1230 ) is ( map niap ) of ( anticlines antichues ) in southern Utah , showing roads , courses of ( rivers rivers- rivers ) and principal mountains . ( R . . 1012 . ) Machinery ( for foi ) ( drilling drill-hig drillhig ) the ( Frank Fi-ank Fiank ) Shafer ( well -well well ) No . 1 was ( moved iiioired ) to the site in the winter of 1924 and ( actual actiial ) drilling operations commenced early in ( 1925 19205 ) ; the John L . ( Shafer Sbafer ) well was started in the spring of 1926 ; the Hazelwood ( well xvell ) was started about the ( same saine ) time ; and the ( Promniel Prommel ) No . 1 well in 1927 . The ( John Joh-ii Johii ) ( L Ij ) . Shafer well , the last well drilled , was started in ( 1928 192S ) . In 1926-27 there was a well drilled on the San Juan anticline near the San Juan River another , on Cedar ( Mesa Alesa ) north of the San Juan River and another north of the San Juan on the Elk Ridge . With reference to Bluff the Cedar Mesa ( well welI ) is to the west and about four or five ( miles infles ) from the San Juan River . The ( San Sail ) Juan well is on the ( Sail San ) Juan anticline on the right bank of the San Juan River . The Elk Ridge well is about ( forty-five fortyfive ) miles north from the San Juan River . The equipment , tools , and supplies for drilling these wells were taken to the sites by automobile and no supplies were taken by way of the rivers .
