Show Compl . Exh . No . 233 , at 580 Aztec Fort , on the Aztec bottom , down below Bowknot Bar , where the Aztec Indians had farmed by irrigation . The ditch was about sixty feet above sea level . ( R . 1962 . ) Aztec Fort is about ( one-half onehalf ) mile back from the river , at a point ( where -where where ) the river makes a back turn , and the fort is on a high point between the bends . He saw four of these ancient buildings at this point ( on oil ) both the Green and Colorado Rivers . There were ( 110 no ) Indians living there at that ( time tinie ) , as they were the remains of the Aztec People , the cliff dwellers . He could see where they had farmed a small flat , of possibly a couple of hundred acres on the river bottom . He could trace out the lines of their ditches and their laterals , but there was no sign of how the Indians got there and no trail that he knew of or saw . ( R . 1962-1963 . ) Compl . Exh . The ( rope Tope ) shown is fastened to the boat under the rock ; it is the point at which the expedition lost a boat . . Compl . Exh . No . 237 is the same thing , only had a rise in the river that pretty near submerged the rock . About 3 or 4 days intervened between the time of those two pictures - the water was higher in the taking of the second picture . ( R . 1965 . ) |
