Show 5 deflected and swept directly across the channel , , forming a moving amount of water ; ; the apex of the current where river is so swift ( seemed seeined ) to pile up , lihe a little ridge of ( water -water water ) , three or four feet high ; to sweep the boats around and get through this apex , without being swept on to the opposite bank , required rather skillful navigation . The water in the river was excessively muddy ; ; could not see an inch below the surface . In places of less declivity , the water flows fairly smoothly , but rocks can not be seen and are bumped into . When they decided to run to shore one man stood up on the forward deck to help to get to shore ; as they approached the shore the boat struck a submerged rock , tilted the boat , and threw him into the water . This is mentioned to point out the ( im- im ) possibility of seeing the rocks beneath the surface . They run into sandbars at a number of ( places plaees ) between Greenriver and the junction of the two rivers , and there are many of them in that stretch of river . These interfered with the navigation of the boats to the extent that it was necessary to leap overboard , push the boats off into deep water and ( guide them carefully as the swift water caught the boats again . ( R . . 44-45 ) One man habitually ( -wore wore ) a bathing suit ; some cut their trousers midway ( be- be ) tween the knee and hip , but they were always ready to go overboard at any ( time thne ) . . ( R . 44-46 . ) Met no other boats in this stretch of river , and saw no other people . On the east bank of the river |
