Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show There is a rock ledge 629 in river at ( Moutli AMouth ) of Lake Canyon . ( R . ( 2356 21356 ) . ) From Lees ( Perry Ferry ) upstream to Hite ; had a line ( about aboiit ) 120 ft . long on boat and walked ( np up ) ; there are places where he waded to get around point of sand and always was wet . At rapids coiled rope in boat and nosed the boat up ( over oiler ) rapid . ( ( B R ) . 2357-58 . ) Placer mined at Red Canyon all summer . ( R . 2358-59 . ) Saw no other placer miners . In summer of 1908 some people mined at where he had mined on down trip , but they left by wagon from old ( Stantou Stanton ) dredge . Supplies obtained by wagon from ( Hanksville Haliksville ) or Greenriver . From Red Canyon he would drag boat up river and get the supplies . ( R . 2360 . ) Hite , ( in ha ) ( 1907 L907 ) , had a post office of log cabins . Hite is at head of bar about 2 miles long and ( one-fourth onefourth ) mile wide . Trachyte Creek , comes down to river there . Cultivated and irrigated land on both sides of Trachyte Creek ; probably 20 acres . Compl . Exh . ( 11-D 11D ) , photograph 199 , is Hite as he saw it in 1907 ; shows Trachyte Creek and rapids . ( R . 2360-2361 . ) Red Canyon is a long bottom ; placer ground 195 ft . above river ; ranch on bottom land . Picture 200 of ( Compl Conipl ) . ( Exh Exb ) . No . ( 11-D 11D ) represents ranch . ( R . 2362 . ) Not ( irrigable ixrigable ) from river ; lies 22 to 25 ft . above river ; irrigated from springs and a little stream .
