Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show Dolores and ( Mancos Alancos ) , Colorado 650 , by railroad ; ( freight froight ) rates from there to Mexican Hat about 4 cts . per pound ; hay in Bluff cost about 15 and at ( Mexican Alexican ) Hat when landed worth 80 a ton . Roads were poor from Bluff to Mexican Hat , . hard traveling . ( R . ( 2506-2507 2500'--2507 ) . ) Continued ( oper- oper ) ations in San Juan country until about 1925 and saw river frequently ; saw a few small boats ( on oil ) river belonging to prospectors from Farmington , N . ( M Al ) Never knew of placer miners or oil prospectors bringing machinery in with boats ; a few ( prospec prospec- prospec ) ¬ tors came down river in boats , but never saw any of them go back up river . ( R . ( 2057-2508 2057-9-508 ) . ) Merchants in Bluff did not use river for ( send-' send ) ing out or receiving merchandise . Had ferry boat used ( in ill ) trading with Indians ; Indians ( only'people onlypeople ) that could ( man mau ) ferry boat , stripped off clothing and ( zig-zagged zigzagged ) boat across . ( R . 2508 . ) Observed sand waves at many points from Bluff on down ; usually occurred during high water and after storms . ( R . 2508 . ) Prospecting in 1892 crossed river number of times with burros ; ( crossed croso-ed crosoed ) in December in knee boots without getting knees wet . ( R . 2508-2509 . ) He had some experience on Colorado River while mining property in White Canyon near Hite in 1907 , 1908 . ( "Went Went Went ) to Hite overland from Bluff with pack animals ; crossed on cable Ferry ; went out overland by way of Hanksville to Greenriver . ( R . 2509 . ) |
