ZAHN For Complainant ( Record , Vol . 11 , pp . 2074-2091 ) Resides at Los Angeles , California ; 51 years old ; May , 1902 , went into San Juan country for mining company , ( R . 2074 . ) Brother of Otto J . ( Zalin Zahn ) , Went from Flagstaff , Arizona , by ( wagon -wagon wagon ) to ( min- min ) ing property located 5 miles down from Copper Canyon on San ( Juan Jua-n Juan ) River . Had machinery freighted in from Flagstaff by team and wagon , distance of 200 miles . ( R . 2075 . ) Been on road out through Bluff several times . Never seen any settlers in country west of Bluff living on ranches and farms ; only people there are Indians . Buildings were already at the mine ; made alterations . ( R . 2076 . ) Lumber brought in on wagons . Stayed on this trip June , July , and August , ( 1902 1901 ) San Juan River was high ; gradually went down latter part of July , and dried up completely for about five weeks . Started to rain first of ( Septem Septem- Septem ) ber and when he saw it again , it was pretty high , full of floating trees and logs , at point called ( But- But ) ( ler's lers ) Wash , 15 miles down below Bluff . ( R . 2077 . ) Went back ( in hi ) November ; stayed until February following year . River was low ; froze in ( January J'Anuary JAnuary ) , except small streams foot and half wide ; when he first went there in it was 40 or 50 ft . wide and about 2 ft . deep . |
