Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show ( During Duriiig ) the first trip the 149 emigrants came into the San Juan country at Bluff after crossing the ( Colo- Colo ) rado River at Lees ( Perry Ferry ) . The first trip was ( a -t t ) kind of prospect party to see whether it was fit for colonization scheme . They then swung back across near ( Moab Afoab ) and crossed the Green at the town now called Greenriver back to his old home . The second trip consisted of the colonizers and went to the ( Hole-in-the-Rock HoleintheRock ) , crossed the Colorado River by ferry , and went to Bluff overland by team and wagon . The rescue party left Bluff and travelled ( west west- west ) ( ward -ward ward ) overland to the Colorado River opposite ( Hole-in-the-Rock HoleintheRock ) . When the ferry was stolen at the ( Hole-in-the-Rock HoleintheRock ) the emigrants forded the river . ( R . 548-550 . ) The emigrants constructed the road to the ( Hole- Hole ) ( in-the-Rock intheRock ) and from the south side of the river to Bluff along the north side of the San Juan River . Horses , mules , and ox teams were used in drawing ( the -the the ) wagons . They ran cattle on the south side of the San Juan River between Bluff and Mexican Hat and ( some some- some ) ( times -times times ) crossed over to the north side . They ( had liad ) considerable trouble with sand bars and ( quicksand quicksaiid ) in crossing the San Juan River , for where the river ( doesn't doesnt ) have much fall the channel changes with the different stages of the water and the sand bars shift their positions constantly . . . ( R . 550-552 . ) |
