Show 38 ( breaks brea'Ics breaIcs ) in the general surface of the Nvater . River enters the canyon about two miles below , and flows continuously in the two canyons named by ( Major Afajor ) Powell . The river channel meanders on last stretch between rock walls , with alternating ( sand- sand ) bars on each side of river ; with crossing baxs ( be- be ) tween all of the straight stretches . Bed of channel is sand and silt deposited on account of slack water ; the ( channel ebanuel ) wanders and meanders between those bars . Surveyed three or four of larger typical sidebars in order to get idea of their characteristics , how permanent , how they cut and washed ; took photographs and soundings . ( R . 184 . ) ( "With With With ) small boats ( 110 no ) great trouble on bars , because if got on bar would push off . ( ( E R ) . 184 . ) Encountered sand bars continuously through that strip . Crossing bars can be called such or shoals ( where -"rhere rhere ) depth runs from one inch to half a foot . ( R . 185 . ) That generally was the condition , a gentle , , ( slow-moving slowmoving ) stream , so that might make a mile or two miles an hour upstream by rowing , the ( velocity -velocity velocity ) being two or three miles an hour . Can make ( prog- prog ) ress upstream with effort , one or two miles an hour , , as he could judge where they would have to drift down past the bar and then try to row back to the bar . Channel ( iii hi ) no sense permanent , , except here and there , going around a curve the outer edge of the flood channel where ( water -water water ) abuts against rocky slope or rock wall , in a sense that it would be a fixed , , permanent place .
