They have a ( man inan ) on each ( side-this sidethis ) trip they went ( down-tbey downtbey ) had a man in the front of the boat on each sidewith an oar , and these men would stick the oar into the water to ( bottom botton-1 botton1 ) , and they would hold their hand where the top of the water was ; then they would raise it over their shoulder , so that man at the wheel could see the depth of the water as they were going along ; the man on the left side of the boat would do it , and the man on the right side would do it , and by this sounding they would guide the boat downstream . ( R . 1035 . ) They got stuck on a sand bar going down . Got boat off in this way : They had a couple of little windlasses on each side of the boat ; they had a ( row- row ) boat along , and would go ashore , tie a rope either to a tree or a rock , and then windlass themselves off the sand bar . They did this once . It is a little ratchet windlass , little hand windlass . ( He Ile ) came back up on boat . Had trouble with sand bars once ; there , however , they reversed the engine , because the sand bars facing downstream are steep , just the front end of the boat which catches ; it is not as ( diffi- diffi ) cult to get off the bar . It is not as difficult to get off a sand bar coming up the river as going down the |
