Chaquc loge conrient plufieurs lemcnces arrondics ' attachees des deux cotes au bord interne & trcs-barbu de chaque cloi1on. Obferv. Les Ambromes femblent fc rapprocher des Quetmies ( Hibifcus) par la forme de leurs cap!"u lcs; mais elles s'en eloignent par leurs fleurs, qui ont de grands rapports avec celles des Cacaoyers. Ses tiges font pareilJemcnt ligneufes , fimples, droites , cylindriqucs & feuill ccs; mais elles s'clc.~vent un peu dav:uJtage. Scs feuilles lont alternes , ovales- oblongues , pointues ' non ~nguleu{es ' legerement en cocur a l eLlr bafe , un peu dentecs , 1ur-tout dans leur partic infcrieurc , & .cinq ou fix fois plus longucs que leur petiole. Elles font vertes , molles , glabrcs en dcfli1s , mcdiocremcnt ;mbefcentes en def{ ous , & ont leur furfacc pofl:crieure munic d'une ncrvure moycnne bien faillante , & de nervures l atcralcs moins marquees. Lcs fleurs font un peu plus grandes que celles de l'efpece ci- de!fus, ant au moins deux pouces de diamctre, naitfent dans l es ai!Telles des feuilles fuperieures & au !ommet des riges , portees fur des pcdoncules courts , pcu divifes , & font d'un pourpre foncc ou noidtrc. J'ai ob!erve cet arbriff"eau vivant, ainfi que le pre~ cdent, au Jardin Imperial de Vienne en Autriche, en 1781. Ils ctoient l'un & l'autrc en fleur , dans le mois de Septembre de la meme annee. TJ • AMBROSIE, A./IIIBROSIA; genre de plante a fleurs conjointes & en mcme terns mono1ques , qui a de grands rapports avec les LampotLrdes & lcs Arnzoijes, & qui comprend un potit nombre d'efpcces connucs , qui f~mt des herbes dont les fleurs ont peu d'apparence. Les fleurs font de deux fortes; les unes campofees , m~les ou fl:criles ' & difpo!ces en cpi ' & les autres fimplcs' & fituees au-deffous des males, dans lcs aiffclles des feuilles qui font au bas des epis. La fleur compofc(>-male eft formce par un calice commun , monophyle, & applati, qui fouticnt plufteurs fleurons fort petits , tubul6s & quinque~ fides. Ces fleurons font munis de cinq ctamines, dont las anthcres font droites & parallE~les , & d'un ftyle filiforme tet·mine par un frigmate orbicule & membraneux. La fleur femelle n'a point de corolleo; fon ovaire efl: place dans un calice monophylc entier , per( ifrant , & enrourc de cinq dents vers fon milieu. Le fryle que porte l'ovaire efr divifc en deux branches divet:gentes. . Le fruit cfr une petite noix nniloculairc, motlofperme, & formee par le calice qui s'cft durci, & a acquis une confifrance coriace. Les Amhrofles fe difringuent des Lampourdes , en ce que dans celles-ci le calice commun des fleurs males' n'efr point d'une feule piece; & le fruit n'efi point uniloculaire. · AMB 127 E s r E c E s. Les fleurs males formenc au fommet de la tige & de fcs rameaux des cpis d'une couleur jaunatre , & longs d'cnviron trois pouces. Cette plante cro1t dans Ia Virginie & lc Canada. Les fleurs males forment, par leur diipofition, des cpis verdiitres ou jaunatres, CJUi termineut lesrameaux & la tige. Chaque fleur femble renverfce & tournce preique vers la terre. Je n'ai point vu les plantcs 13 & 'Y que ie cite; neanmoins je ne trouve pas de raifons fitflifantcs ' quant a prefent, pour Jes regarder comme des efptkes difl:inl:les.
