Du milieu des feuilles s'elcve une tige haute de quatre pieds, tres-droite, cylindrique , fer me, de l 'cpaiilcur du doigt, & garnie dans fa longueur de folioles alternes, oblongues, pointues , concaves, & qui n'ont aucunes dents en leurs bords. Les tleurs font petites , feffiles , & naiffent difpofecs fur des cpis lonp de fix pouces ' fitues dans les :Jiflclles des c~ailles ou folioles fupcricures de la tige ; un {c)ul de ces epis fe trouvant terminal. A ces fl curs {i~-eccd :c-nt des fruits arrondis , avec unc petite pointe, difpofes en grappes fimples, d 'abord trcs- blancs, & qui deviennent en{uite d'un rouge de corail cclatant. Ces fruits renfcrment des fcmenccs petites , oblongucs & roufiid.tres. Cette pi ante crolt naturcllement a laMartinique, dans le.~ bGis. 7,t. Lc 1:!. Il leur fuccede des gouffes comprimces , longues d'environ neuf pouccs , ayant un pouce de largeur, & terminces en pointe. Ccs gouffBs contiennent des graines applaties & gris:hres. Ces feuilles font grandes, larges ' longues de fix a !mit pouces' portees fur des petioles fort courts, d'un verd brun en leur furface fupericure, & chargces en deffous d'un duvet ou coton blanchatre. Son fruit conticnt un noyau. Ces graines font noires, luiGtntes , entources d'une pt!lpe muqucufc, & d 'une odcur dcfagrcable qui•fe remarque aufTi dans l'ccorce un peu fucculente de cec arbre. L'Auaffer crolt dans les Jieux montagneux & pierreux de l'Ifle d'Onza;, l'une des Moluques. Son bois e11 dur & pefimt. AN AVINGUE, ANAVINGA; gen.re de plante a fleurs incomplctes ' qui comprend des a.tbres des Indes orientales, jufqu'a preient peu connus des Botani!les. Cei arbrcs portent , dans les aiffclles de leurs feuilles , des fleurs petites & de peu d'apparence. C A R A C T E R E G t N t R I Q U E. La. fleur a un calice de cinq foliolcs ovales, concaves; ouvertes en role, & per!i11antcs. Die n'a point de corolle; mais a la bale de cha(rue foliole dtt cal ice, on obferve deux corpufculeJ pcdiculcs, une fois plus courts que lcs folioles calicinales, & heri.ffcs de petits pails. Lcs ctamines font au nombre de dix , de la longueur du du calice, & ont leurs filamens in(cres alternativement entre les corpufcules , fur la baf7 des folioles du calice. Leurs anthcres font petttes , ovo'ides, & partagces en deux par unfillon. L'~va.ire e11 fup crieur, globuleux ou ov ~, charge d ,un .fl:yle court , & termine par un ibgmate en tete fph crique. Le fruit e11 une baie ovale on globuleufe, mar-quee de cinq cores ou cann~!urcs lcgercs ' ~ qui renferme des femences ov01des & rouffeatres , difperfces dans upe pulpe. Obf'erv.
