Show XXVll) DISC OURS PRELIM INA IRE. nement ; d'avoir , dans une infinite de cas, choifi des noms de vegetaux dans les Ouvrages des Anciens , pour les rapporter a des Plantes qui n'ont rien de commun avec les vegetaux qui les portoient autrefois ; d'avoir don.ne lieu a quantite d'equivoques' en mnltipliant par differens idiomes , l'expreffion d'une meme idee ou d'un feul nom deja connu , pour faire de ces nouveaux mots les noms propres de divers genres qui n'ont aucun rapport entr'eux ; d 'a voir enfin affecre de ne jamais cirer les noms de pays dans l'expofition qu'il a faite des Planres exotiques dont il a eu connoiffance; ce qui eft caufe qu'on ne fait a quoi rapporter les relations fouvent tr<~s-intereffantes que nous font les Voyageurs fur les proprietes de beaucoup de vegetaux etrc.ngers. Au ref1e, quel eft l'Auteur dont les Ouvrages font en tout irn~prochables, qui ne s'efi jamais trompe dans ce qu'il a voulu faire d'utile , & qui a porte la perfecrion dans tous les objets dont il s'eft occupe ? A.infi , malgre les defaurs du fyfl:c~me :iexuel' malgre meme les ufages condamnables que fon Auteur a introduits dans beaucoup d'innovations qu'il a faites , il reHe tOli)OUrs evident que Ie Savant celebre dont il s'agit, a fingulierement contribue par fes travaux en general , aux vrais progres de la Botanique ; qu'il a recule confiderabtement les limites de nos connoiffances dans cette partie, & qu'il n'a point du tout fait de .cette Science une Science de mots , comme le pnhendent des perfonnes qui ne la connoiffent nullement. L'emulation dans rerude de la Botanique ' avoit toujours ete en augmentant de puis que l''illufire Tot1rnefort avo it change la face de cette Science par le jour qu'y ,repandi.rent fes favans ecrits; elle redoubla • encore d'une maniere fenfiblc , lorfque "Earut Ie (;:elebre Linne , qui developpa bien •6avantage les- principes de cette partie de <nos connoiffitnces , & qui , comme nous l'avons depi. cli't ' en etendtt confiderablement les points de vue. Auffi les Botaniftes contemporains de cet Anteur celebre fqrcnt-ils fort nembreux ; & tous anime~ par l'exemple qu'il leur donnoit, d'une acti\·ite fans egale dans fes recherches ' travaillerent a l'cnvi a qui ajouteroit aux conno! fiances acquifes , ou perfectionneroit celles qui font fufceptibles de l'etre. Les parti!ans zcles du Botanifie Sucdois, comme les rivaux decides de ce grand homme, tOllS neanmoins fe reffentirent dt! l'influen· ce generale de ces favans ecrits; car quoiqu'on fut plus ou mains partage fur les clalfes qu'il falloit admettre dam la difhibmion des vegetaux, on commen~a deslors a obferver avec un foin qui n'avoit jamais en d'exemple dans les tems qui ont precede; on chercha une prccifion finguliere dans Ia determination des genres; & les dcfcriptions qu'on fit alors des Plantes, furent en general fi completes , qu'on peut: dire qu'elles fixent pour toujours les carac-teres vraiment difiinttifs de ces Plantes memes. Un des Botaniftes les plus remarquables, qui fut contemporain de Li~ne , efl: le celebre Albert de Halter, Sui!fc, qui a ete Profdfeur a Gottingue , & qui ne s'efl: pas mains difl:ingue dans d'autres partic's des connoi!fances humaines , puifque dans la Pbyfiologie , on peut prefque dire· qu'il s'efi immortalife. Quoiqne ce Savant ait compofc un grand ncmbrc d'OuvraO'es inrereffans , & qui tons font le prod~tit d'un travail inconcevable, nous ne citerons ici que trois de fes principaux fur Ia Botanique. Le premier eft fon Hijloire des· Plantes indigenes de la Suiffe, qui parut en 1768, en deux Volumes in-folio, & dont il avoit dejd. donne une premiere edition en 1742, fous le titre d'Erzwneration de-s Plantcs indigenes de la Suij{'e. Cet excellent livre contient les defcriptions de pres de 2)00 vegetaux ' parmi lefquels fe trouvent un grand nombrc de Plantes Alpines fort rar~s. 11 eft feulement domrnage que fon Auteur fe fait opiniatre a ne point citer les no~·ns tri~iaux ou fpecifiques de ·Linne; ce qm aurott rendu fon Ouvrage bien plus commode, vula grande utilite de ces noms: mais ce qui efi bien fingulier , c'efi qu'on ne trouve pas meme de' correfPondance de Ia feconde edition avec la premiere l dam~ D IS C 0 V R S P ]{ E L I M I N A I R E. xxix POuvrage dont i1 s'agit. Le fecond parut en 1713 , fous le titre d'Enumeration des Plantes du Jardi:z Royal & des cnyirons de Gouing: on y trouve Ia def~ription de plufieurs Plantts rares. Le y;o1fieme enfin ell fon Bibliotheca Botanica , qui fut publie en 1771, en deux Volumes in-4°. Ce livre dl une collection confiderable, faite avec bcauconp de connoi!fance & de difcernemenr des noms de tous ceux qui ont ecrit quelque chafe fur la Botanique, avec la. citation de leurs Ouvrages. Dans fon Enumeration des Plantes indi .. genes de Ia SuWe, Haller a execute une methode fondee fur divcrfes confiderations ; mais principalement fur celle du nombre des etan'lin'es ' compare a celui des clivifions de la corolle.
