J e ne balance pas a le dire , ~Ies fervice innombrables que les plantes peuvent rens dre a l'homme dans tOllS les cas poffibles - ne refulteront jamais de la feule rechcrch. de leurs venus & de leurs qualites partie culieres; on ne pourra fe flatter de les obtenir qu'autant que I' on fera marcher com mede front cette meme recherche avec !'etude fuivie des caraB:eres qui difiinguent les plantes , & qui font le feu! moyen d'en perperuer la connoi!fance. On trouve une preuve bien convaincante de cette verite, lorfqu'on remonte aux tems les plus recules , pour y envifager l'etat ou etoit alors la Botanique. Dans ces tems ou cette belle fcience etoit ~1 peine naiffante, les hommes s'occupant uniquement de fon utilire, ne prenoient aucune precaution pour affurer les proprietes des plantes que !'experience ou d'heureux hafards leur avoient fait decouvrir ; ils m!gli ... geoient entierement le moyen de perpetuer leurs decouvertes par la di.H:inclion & l'exaB:e defcription des plantes qui en crcient l'objet' & par cela feul ' leurs fi rcces n'curenr qu'une utilite momentanee & paffage re. Les noms des-tors furent tous donnes fans jugement & fans principes ; ils fe multiplierent diverfement pour les memes chofes, preparerent d'avance tous ]es inconvcniens infeparables des efforts qu'il a fallu faire dans la fuite pour reparer cette .nomenclature defecrueufe ; & des ce tems occafionm!rent par-tout Ia confufion par Ies applications erronees que cette caufe rendit inevitables. a ) |
