Ils font enveloppes a leur bafc par des ecailles ovales , concaves, & iOutiennent chacun une ieule fleur penchce. Leur corolle imite un petit grelot; ellc efr un peu refferrce a fon ouverture ' legerement d6coupee en fon bord , & d'un pourpre vif m~I6 de blanc. Scs flcurs font blanchatrcs, grandcs , pcuonculces ) & naiffent quatre a huit en{cmble par petits bour1uers places tantot !eulement dans le.~ ai!felles des fcuilles, & tantot fur un rameau nud , formant a\ors une cfpece de grappe terminalc & unilatcrale; ce qui confritue pent-t!tre deux varietes di.fl:inCles. Leurs corolles font ovales-cylindri( jUes, un peu campanulces; elles ont quatre lignes de longueur , & font prefqu'auffi larges. leurs pcdoncules font longs de quatre i fix I ignes, & om une couleur un peu ferrugineu!e, ainfi que les calices. Chaque decoupure calicinale efr etroite- lanceolee, & marquee de trois lignes ou netvures longitudinales. Cette plante crolr naturellement dans le Maryland & la Virginie. b. Ce petit arbriffcau ne Ie cede point en beaute au precedent, quoique fe~ fleurs ne foient pas tout-a-fait auffi grandes. La beaute de fon feuillage lui donne mcme un afpea plus interefi'anr. 11 s'elcve jufqu'~ la hauteur de trois pieds. Sa tige ic pan age en pluG curs rameaux feuill cs , glabrcs , rouge:1tres , & remarquables par les angles tranchans dont ils font munill. Ces angles font interrompus a chaque feuille ' & femblent ~tre une fuite de Ia dccurrc.nce de leurs petioles. Ses feuilles font alternes, ovales ou ovales-lanceolees, trcsenticres ' coriaces ' glabres des deux cotes ' li!ies & trcs-luifantes en de!fus ' munies d'une cote moyen,ne faillante en defT' us & en deffous, garnies d'un rebord particulier , forme par uno nervure qui rcgne dans leur contour ' & remarquablcs par leur furface infcricure parfernee de quantite de poims no irs, tres-petits , & chargee de nervurcs laterales, fourchues vers leur fommct , quoiCJue peu faillantes. Ces feuilles ont un pouce & demi ou deux pouces de longueur, fur plus d'nn pouce de large , & font portces par dt.:; petioles treseourrs. Les fleurs nartfent quatre 3 fept enfemble par petits bouquets axillaires , fitucs le long des rameaux, & particulierement vers leur fommet A N D 1~7 Leurs calices & leurs pedoncules font cou•ferH d'u~~ infinite de petites g!andes d'un rouge brun , pre!que confluentes , qlll rendent leur fupcrficie im5gale & comme chagrinee. Ces pedoncules font longs de trois ou quatre !ignes. Les corolles font ovales & d'un blanc rouge~tre. les capfules font globuleuics, plus courtes que le calice qui les cnvironne, & ne '?onfervent point le D.:yle de l.l fleur.
