Chiron , Efculape, Achille, Melampc, Orphee , . & beau coup d'autrcs font de ce nombre; & it y a apparencc· que longtems encore avant eux ,. comme jc viens de lc dire , l'on s'appliquoit a connoitrc les plantes. Selon le temoignage de plufieurs Auteurs anciens , Pyrhagore & quelques autres avoient deja ecrit fur ce fujet; mais it ne nous refte rien des ouvrages qui ont ete faits alors fur les plantes; & Hippocrate , ce vrai Fondarcur de la Medecine, qui de fon tems, fit !'admiration de route Ia Grece, & dont les ecrits font encore infiniment precieux , n'a lui-meme fait mention que des plantes qu'on cmployoit alors dans le traitement ·des maladies , en rapportant feulement leurs no111s , & leurs proprietes medicinal es. Crateias, Contemporain d'Hippocrate , & qui fans doute n1efl pas le meme que ce Cratevas qui donna a une plante le nom du Roi Mithridate ; Crateias , dis-je, s'acquit auffi dans ce tems beaucoup de n!putation par les connoi!fanccs qu'il avoir fi1r les plantes.
