Et excepte quelques obfervations intereffantes auxquelles ce confl.it donna lieu' il en refulta bien-tot que chaque Auteur, chaque TraduB:eur & chaque Commentateur eut un fentiment qui lui fur particulier ; ce qui fit que , ne s'accordant plus ' on donna fouvent a une meme plante quantite de noms differens, & en meme tems lc meme nom a des piantes diverfes. Auffi on pent dire qu'alors Ia Botanique fur jeree dans un tel cahos de nomenclature , que l'on ce!fa prefllu'enticrement de s~entendre. Cette confulion cependant produiftt a Ia fin un bon effet; car on fut oblige d~thudier Ies plantcs elles-mernes , & de cherchcr ~~ en connoitre les caraEtc~res difiinctifs' afin de parvenir a deiigner fuffifamment cellcs dont on vouloit parler. Ce qui porta chacun a examiner les plantes de fon pays ' aulinr de fe horner uniquement a l'etude des anciens livres, & de s'enteter a decouvrir les plantes de Theophr.zjle & de,!Jif!fco;i~e, n'etant plus dam le pays qu 1ls habJtotent; & ce fut alors qu'il commencl ~~ fe former reellement des Botanifte;. 5 E I Z I E M E 5 I E C L E. Cela nc pouv. oit erre autrcment , vu que les Medecins qui feuls s'occupoient des plantes' etant nee !faircment adonnes a l'etude des maladies , & forces par confcquent de· paffer nne grande parrie dcleur temsaupres meme des maladcs , nc pouvoient fc livrer aux courfes continuelles & fouvent confideraPles qu'cxige l'thude des vcgetaux. D'ailleurs les rentatives & Jes moyen~ par lefqu.cls on parvient a decouvrir les verrus des planres , ainfi que tout ce qui concerne leur emploi , n'etant nullement compatibles avec la nature des recherches qu'il faut fatrc pour detenTtiner les carath~res difiincrtf! de chaque efpece de plante , & en a!fi1rer folidement la connoiffance ; il a fallu de route m!ceffite que les Medecins facrifiaffent cette derniere confi.derarion & qu'ils mitfcnt feulement leurs foins ~ trouver. ou a a.rrrib~ler des ~errus aux planres, obJet qm les tntereffoxt le plus directelnent. En effet , independamment des Auteurs qui alors , par leurs recherches, ont rente de pofer les premiers fondemens de la Botanique, tels que les deux Cordus pere & fils., Lebouc ·ou Tragus, Leonard Fuchs, Ru.dltus, &c. on difiingue fur-tout Gejizer, qmle premier fentit qu'il falloit divifer les plan res en cla!fes, en genres & en efp~ces , & qui a la gloire d'avoir etabli) avant qui que ce foit, Ia neccffite de chercher dans Ia fleur & dans le fruit , les caraB:eres diftinetifs les plus dfentiels des cla!fes & des gen~es. ~e . en?uiffe vers l'an I) 16, Gcfner culnva I Htfioire narurelle, & particulierement Ia Botanique avec tm zete des plus ardens ; & quoique fa fortune fur tres~ ornee, i~ fur m!anmoins le premier, felon 1 obfervatlon de Haller, qui entreprit de former une collection generale d'Hifl:oiro naturell e. II fit differens voyages dans lcs Alpes, la Provence, lc Dauphine, Ie Milancz , &c. & trouva un grand nombre de plantes dont une partie n't~toit point encore connue. Lcs figures des plantes qu'il donna font , quoiqu'cn bois, fort bonncs, & au-ddTi.1s de cc qui avoit raru· avant lui dans ce Benrc. Le fieclc dans lc:qucl vc\cut Cefner, cfi fin•ruliercment rcmarquable par le grand 11 0~1brc de BotaniH:es difl:ingues qu'il produiGt , & qui, chacun rlans leur genre , cxercant leurs talens & leur genic par des rcch~rchcs, des comparaifuns & des obfervations nombreufcs , contribtH:!rcnt beaucoup a l'avancement de Ia Botanique. Nous allons en citer quclqucs-uns des plus dignes d\~tre remarqucs, jufqu'~' l'cpoquc des Banbin, en nous arrctant fl.ulcmcnt un peu ~t Cafalpin, Auteur de la premiere methode de Botanique qui fut inventcc. Un des A utcurs lcs plus conn us , qui fut Contemporain de Gcfner, &qui vint meme un peu avant lui , cfi P. Andre J.Ylaulziole, Mcdecin Senois , qui vecur _a I a Cour de l'Empereur , comme fon Medccin , & demeura enfuite long-tems a Trente , petite Ville du Tyrol. Cet Auteur s'acquit beaucoup de celcbrite par fes longs Commenraires fur Jcs fix Livrcs de Diofcoride ; nc~nmoins rl parolt' par les defcriptions qu'il a donnees, qu'il connoiffoit peu les plantes lui-mcme , quoiqu'il en ait cite un ft grand nombre dans fes Ouvragcs ; & d'ailleurs le peu de foin qu'il mit fouvent dans ce gui concernoir la verite des figures qn'il publia, nc laiffe point une idee qui foit bien favorable ~~ cet Ecrinin. 11 faut cependant lui rendre cette }uflice que dans Jes dernieres editions de fes Commenraires' il fe rctracta en plufiems cndroits ' fit beaucoup de corrections , & donna de meilleures figures, parmi lefLJUellcs il s'en tronve meme de plantes rarcs. Adam Loniccr, Heffois, qui vecnt 1tl'epoque dont nous parlons , publia un tn~smediocre Ouvragc fnr l'Hi:ltoire naturclle , dans lequel il traite des arbres & des arbriffeaux, & enfuitc de ]a nature & des venus des plantes , &c. ll fit au.ffi la defcription des plantes qui croiffent aux environs de Francfort-fur-le-Mein ; malgre c:ela , cet La Botanique eft plus rectevable a Dodoens, ( Dodonceus) Auteur Flamand, d~un favoir vraiment profond , & qui fut un Medccin tres-rcnommc dans fon tcms. Ce 'Botaniile prof< ffc1 la Mcdecine ~t Ley de, & s'adonna pendant prefque route fa vie a l'ctt:de des plantes d'une manicre diftinguee. Le plus remarquable de fes Ouvrages, efi fon Hifloire des Plantes, ornee de plus de 8oo figures affcz bonnes, mais dont un certain nombre fe:ulement font de lui. Les grandes divifions que Dodoens admettoit dans Jes vegetaux' font les arbrcs' les arbriffeaux , les fous-arbriffeaux & lcs herbes. II prefera neanmoins, dans l'expofi.tion de fes fix Pemptadcs, Ia confidcration des gualires des plantes, ou de quelqucsunes de leurs parties , ou de leur grandeur, & ne s'affujettit point fhictement aux divifions qu'il erabllffoit lui-meme. Jacques Da!cc!wmp, ne ;t Caen en Normandie , & qui pratiqua la Medecine a Lyon avec difiinction pendant la plus grande partie de fa vie, efi un des Auteurs de Botanique du fcizieme Gecle, qui s'adonna le plus a £1.ire conno!tre les plantes de Ia France. Cet homme actif, infatigable , & d'une erudition profonde ' entreprit de compofer une Hifloi.re generate des Plantes, Ouvrage immenfe , dans lequel ce Medecin fe propofoit de hire mention de tout cc qui avoit ere dit & dcconvert jufqu'a lui fur cette partie de rHifioire naturelle. L'etendue de cette enrreprife , & les propres affaire de Dalechamp ne lui permirent point d'achever lui-meme fon travail ; il fe fit aider par le Medecin Ddi11oulins, qui le termina' & a qui fans doute on peut attribuer le plus grand nombre des defauts de cet Ouvra.ge. Cette Hifioire fut publiee a pres la 111ort de Dalechamp en deux grands Volumes in·folio ; elie efi divifee en dixhuit livres , & contient 2686 figures mcdiocres' dont plufi. eurs font repetees, & Ia plupart imitccs de Fuchs , de Matt!Liole, &c. Dalechamp y infera cependant be~.ucoup de plantcs rares qui croiilent aux environs de Lyon, |
