Ces lignes & ces taches d'un beau blanc contrafl:ent d'une maniere fort agrcablc avec le vcrd gai qui fait le fond de la coulcur des feuillcs. Les tleurs font d'un beau rouge, & naiff(mt e~ epi Iache au fommet d'une hampe .fimple qut s'cleve du milieu des feuilles : ellcs font un peu pendantes , & ont leur corolle lo11g~e , cylin rique, & prefque rcgulicrc ·en .ron ltmb.e. Elles font chenducs horif'ontalement & rangces fur deux cotes oppoics. Les fleurs naiffent fur une hampe fimple qui s't!lLve du milieu des feuilles a la hauteur d'un pied & demi. Elles font pen dames, rouges , un pcu courbces ' & difpofccs en un long cpi terminal. Cette plante crolt dans }'Afrique ; on la cultive au Jardin du Roi. 7P. ( v. v. ) 22. Ccs fcuilles font d'un verd fale fouvent coulcur de rouille, parfemces de toutes parts de verrues a. peine blanch: 1tres , fortement carinces ou en goutticre dans ]cut· !itrface fupcrieure ' toutes radic ~ lcs ' etencues horifontalement ' & font face de divers cotes fans ctre veritablement difl:iqucs comme celles de l'efpccc prcccdente & de la luivante. ALO De leur milieu s'clcve , ala hauteur de trots pieds ou un pen plus , une hampe cylindrique , nuc & tcrmin6e pat· un 6pi de fleurs o vale, denfe & d'un jaune rougeatre. Ces fleurs font nombreu{es , lerrces, prcfquc fetrilcs, pendantes, & ont leur corolle grele , cylindrique, marquee de fix !ignes dans fa longueur, & Iegcremcnt divifec en ion limbe. Les ctamincs que j'ai examinees avec attention ne s'inferent point fur le tube de b corollc, comme celles des· Aletris; rnais naiffent ccrtainement du receptacle mcme de l 'ovaire' c 'cfr-i-difc du fond de Ia fleur. Elles reffemblent affez a des feuilles de laurier par leur forme, leur confiHance, & la difpofition de leurs nervures. Leur favcur efi un peu acre; mais leur odeur n'efi point defagreable. Les tlcurs nailfcnt deux a quaere enfcmble dans les ai.lfellcs des feuilles, & font incornplcttes, pendantes & attachces chacune a un pedoncule court. Ellcs Ont un calice monophilc, ovale-campanule, divife jufqu'i moitie en trois dccoupures egalcs, Iarges, courtcs & pointues, d'un pourpre noiratre, couvert en dehors de poils blancs , & qui tombent avant la rnaturice du fruit ; environ douze ctamines fort courtes , dilpofeei en trois faifceaux difl:intls , places chacun vis-i-vis chaque divi!ion du calice; & plu!ieurs ovaircs trcs-petits, dont les fryl es font cxtrl!mcmcnt courts , ou peut-~tre nuls. Le fruit efi alongc , cylindrique, pointu aux deux bouts' charnu ' re.ficmble a une filique ' & rentcrmc des femenccs tres - menues , :1 peine fenfibles. Cet arbrilfcau , qui jufqu'a prclent n'efr connu que par RhCede , crolt au Malabar, .dans les terreins {ablonneux & cleves. Jl eft toUJOUfS verd, & frucHfie deux fois I' an.
