Ses feuillcs font altcrncs , p6tiolees , ovalcs-lanceolCes , enticrcs , venes & un peu luilimres. Les flcurs de cet arbre font dio'iques, c'efl:-i-dire , toujours d'un feul fcxe fur chaque pied. Cclles qui font m:ilcs naifi(mt au f;Jmmct des branches , difpofces en chatons cylindriques, n'ont point de corolle, & !onrconfl:ituces par trois porites etamines nues & filiformes. Les rieds femellcs portent auffi des chatons qui font garnis de petites fleurs incomplettes, fans corolle & fans calice : chacune de ces fleurs efl: formee fimplement par un ovairc nu, arrondi , ayant trois cotes peu fcn!ibles ' & charge de trois fl:yles courts. Cet ovaire devient une capfule glabre , compofec de trois coques reunies & monofpcrmes. Toutes les parties de cet arbre , & fur-tout fcs jcunes branches , font remplies d'un fuc laiteux , abondant, acre & tres-cauHique; de forte que , lorfqu'on les coupe) on s'expo{e a perdre la vue ' s'il en iautc dans les yeux. Le bois de cet arbre , & particulicrcmcnt certaines parties de fa fub!l:ancc , choi!ics luit dans le voifinage des racines , ioit auprcs des nc~uds ou dans les cavites & les crevalfcs dont fon tronc efl: parfemc, font une mati ~ ;c ~ratfe , olea~incufe, trcs-inflamrnablc , & CJUI rcp:md , lorfqu'on la brtrie, une odeur alfez ~grc able, 1ui approche de cel!e du benjoin. Cettc ndeur eH plus forte lorfqu'on rape ce bois fur des charbons ardcns. Rumphe ajoute qu'on s'eo fert rarc me~t feu!; mais qu'on Je m~Je avec quelqu';J.Uuc bots odorant ou avec quelqu'aromate qu.i releve fon odeur, & la rend plus durable: Cet arbre croit dans les Hies Moluqlles. 1). On prefume , avec beaucoup de vraifemblance que le bois d'alocs des boutiques , & le Calamba~ ~u ·on apporte quelquefois de la Cochinchi11e, font le meme bois que celui que Diofcoride a decrit !ous le nom d'Agalloc!wm , & que par la fuite on a nomme X,yloaloes : c'efl:, comme on fait un bois gras, rCfincux, de bonne odeur, d'une ~ou- 1eur brune ou roum~atre' & qui n'a rien de commun avec le fuc 6pai!fi & amer connu !implement tims le nom rl aloes, qui pro~ient d'une plante l iJi acce du mcmc nom. Rai dit, d'aprcs le rappon du Perc Camelli, que le vrai A galloclu: cit un arbre dont l'ccorce eft remplie d'un fuc laiteux, virulent, & tellement cauftique , que s'il en tombe dans les yeux, il caufe l'aveuglement; & qu il excite fur lcs :meres parties du corps des inflammations , & y fait naltre des pufrlllcs. On l'apporte de Ia Cochinchine comme le Calambac; & 11 y a apparence qu'on le retire du mcme arbre. I.es rameaux de cet arbre ont le bois blanc tirant un pcu fi1r lc jaune, & font recouverts d'une ecorce d'un gris rouileatre ' dont la iurfacc efr un peu chagrince ou gerfee ; i!s io.nt velus dans leur partie fup ericurc. Lcs feuillcs font altcrnes, ovalcs- lanccolces, entieres , fonement acuminees , longues de trois pouces & demi , larges de deux pouces , glabrcs & d'un beau verd en leurs furfaccs, qui paroiffent comme fatin ces par la fine.ffe de leurs nervures latcrale11 ; leur nervure moyennc etant ]a feule qui foit faillante en de.ffous ' & qui produife nn filion mediocre en de1fus. Ces fcuill es font foutcnue chacunc par un petiole long d'une a deux lignes, & ·ont IF:urs bords garnis de poils courts. Lcs jcunes feuilles font velues & prcfque blanches aTant leur dcveloppemcnt. Les fleurs, felon le defTin & la defcription de M. Sonnerat, font petites & n'ont point de calice. Leur corolle efl: d'unc feu!c ,Picke, a demi-divi£ec e!l ~inq ~art: ies ovales , potntucs , & ouvcnes en et01lc ; a la bafe mtcrieurc de chaque divi!ion de la corolle' on trouve d~ux petites ecailles qui s'y in!Crent & qui formcnt a !'entree de la fleur una co~ronne compofce de dix netl:aires , felon l'expreffton de M. Sonncrat. Les cramines font courtes, au nombre de dix, & font attachees fitr l:l corolle entre lcs fctl:ions des ncClaires. Le piHil eft forme par un ova ire fupcrieur, ovale, depourvu de il:yle , & couronne par un fl:igmate fimplc fort p·etit. Cet ovaire fe change en une capfitle turbince ou pyriforme, longue d'environ un pouce , & qui s'ouvrc naturellement en deux battans: elle efl: partagce intcrieuremcnt en deux loges qui renferment chacunc une femence noire, ovale , pointue , petite , & dont une avorte prefque tonJours. An bas de chaque fcmence on trouvc un corps fpongieux ; il paro1t tenir la place d'une autre fcmence avortee. Je t n'oferois alfurer que l'arbre dont je viens d'expofer lcs caratl:eres botaniqucs, foit du m~me genre que le Calambac ou l'Agalloc;lwm des anciens; cependant il efl: frappant de trouver dans les Auteurs les deux defcriptions fuivantes, qui concernent l'Agalloclmm dont il s'agit, & qui om de fi grands traits de re.ffemblance avec le Garo que je viens de dccrire. « M. Si cet arbre efr Ie mcme que celui qui donne Ie Calambac, il eft clair qu'il cfl: d'un genre & m~mc d'unc famille bien diffcrentc de l'Agalloch.e d'Amboine,qu'il hut -rapporter i la famille des Euphorbes; tandis que Ie Garo de Malaca, qui parolt otre le Sinkoo de Kempfer, s'en eloignc.beaucoup.
