J.a racine de cette plante efr hori{ontale , trac; ante , groffe eomme le doigt , noueufe, garnie , C\e beau coup de chevelu , & blanch:itre interieurement : elle poufte des feuilles droites, longues, ctroites ' enfiformes ' & qui s'engalnent par lc cote , comme celles des iris, auxquelles elles ref..' femblent enticrcment. Les tiges qui portent les fleurs font comprimces , ont elles-memes l'afpeCl de feuillcs ' & s'ouvrent fur le cote' a-peu- pres vers le milieu de leur hauteur , pour laiffer fortir un charon long prefque de deux pouces , affez femblable i un cpi de poivre ' & par-tout couvert de petites fleurs feffi.les , ferrces les unes contre les autrcs. Ces tleurs font compofees d'une corolle d\) fix pieces courtes & perfifrantes' de fix etamines' & d'un ovaire dont le il:igmate efr feulement un ~oint un peu clevc. Le fruit efr une capfule obtufe, a trois angles , & qui renferme trQ.is femences. On trouvc cette plante dans les foflcs & fur le bord des eaux , en Hollande , en Flandre & en AI face. ~. ( v. v.) Ses feuilles, froiffccs entre les doigts , rendent une odeur affez agreable, & fa racine fi1r-tout eft odoranre, aroma rique, & d'un got~t un peu acre. I.a plante 13 n'en efr qu'une l cgcre varichc' a feuilles un peu plus ctroites & a racine un peu moins groffe : elle crolt dans l'Inde , au Malabar , a Amboine, a Ceylan, & dans l'I!le de Bourbon , oil elle efl: trcs-commune. La racine d'Acorr: efr connue depuis long- terns dans lc commerce : on la regarde commc cordiale, flomachique, carminative & hifrcrique. Ces feuilles font llffes & glabres en deffus; mai~ toute leur furface po!l:erieure , lorfqu'elles font jeunes , efr couverte de fruClification qui les fait paroltre comme enduites d'une cro1~te d'un brun dorc. Linne doutc ft cette plante n'efr pas plntot un polypode , i cauic de fcs points fcminaux difiinCls; mais comme ces points ne gardent aucun ordre dans leur diftribution , je crois que cette plante cfi convenablement placee dans ce genre. Ces feuilles font d'un verd blanchatre ' ont leurs cvcntails .inclines ou . penchC.s , & la c:mnelJJre de leurs A C R 3) digitations efl: remplie d'une poufftere rour.~e:i.trc , lorfqu'elles fruClifient. La plantc 13 a fes digitations un peu plus tongues & plus droites, & les gazons qu'elle forme !ont d'un blanc argcnte. Cctte jolie plante crolt dans l'Inde & aux Hles de France & de Bourbon.
