Ses rameaux font ligneux, couvens d 'une ecorce d'un brun rgugeatre ' & garnis d'aiguillons epars ·' niangulaires' tn3s-applatis fur les cotes' & prefque poim crochns. 5cs fcuillcs iont longues de fix a huit pouces' deux fois a116es ) & ?nt .douze a vingt couples de pinnules lo~gues d e~lVt~on un J?Ouce , & qui chacune fouttctme.nt d1~ a clouze tolioles elliptiques, longues d'une llgne feulement. Ce qui donne un a!pe& trcs-particulier a cette plante, c'efl: qu'cmrc chaque pinnule on trouve deux & iouvent mcme trois aiguillons larges a leur bafe ' tres-applatis fur les cotes ' minces ' membraneux , delw'idcs & blanchatrcs. Deux de ccs aiguillons font oppofes & forment un meme plan avec lcs pinnules; & le troiftemc, lorfqu'il exifl:e, efl: dans une direaion yerpendiculaire ace plan. Ces feuilles .iont deux fois a'llces, & om quatre ou cinq paires de pinnules , qui portent chacune deux ou trois paires de folioles ..ovales-arrondies , glabres, luifantes & nerveufes. Les pedoncules font ftmples , beaucoup plus courts 'lue les feuilles , & naifiimt deux ou trois enfemble dans chaque aiffelle ; ils foutiennent des fleurs .blanches difpofces en tetes un peu globuleu!es. On trouve de petites ecailles ou glandes particulieres a la bafe de cha. que paire de folioles. les flipules font remarquaplclll dans cette efpece ; cUes font cordiformes , ;Pointucs , larges de fix !ignes , glabres & fouvent ~olo,rc~s lln rouge. Les ped9ncules font en grap~e ACA paniculee , & munis 3 la naiffance de leurs diviftons 1 de braaees iemblablcs aux flipules. Ils portent des fleurs blanches , en boule & auxquclle~ iuccedent des goufies de quatre 'pouces de longu~ ur, larges d'un pouce, planes & d'un jaune n01ratte : elles renferment huit o'u neuf femence:o prcfqu'orbiculaires, noires & luifantes. Ses fleurs font blanchatres & difpofces en panicules ter~inales; leur calice. e!l: partage jufqu'a fa bafe en cmq decoupures pomtues & pubeicentes exter~ eu:em:nt ; la corolle . eft de cinq petalcs lanceo. les-I:nea~res, _& deux fo1s plus longs que Ie calice; les ctanunes font att nombre de dix , & remarquables en ce qu'une d'entr'clles e!l: un peu plus grandes que les autres, & porte une anth~re qui tombe de~ 1'6pano~iffement de ta fleur. Le pifl:il efl: un ova1re arrond1 , fituc au fond de la corolle & charge d'un !l:yle en al~ne qui tcrmine un fl:ig~ mate tronque. A la bafe des fleurs, il y a beaucoup de braClees lanceolCes, qui font puro1tre la panicul.e tcrminee pa_r d~s ~ouquets un pcu denfes. Le [~u1t efr une no1~ remforme, lifie & gris~trc: exteneurement , qUI renfcrme une amande de m~mo forme, don~ la fubfl:ance eft blanche & qui cfl: attachce par fon plus gros bout au ron:me~ d'un receptacle charnu' ovale & de la grofi"eur d'une poi~e moyenne. Ce receptacle, qu'on nomme pomme d Aca1ou ~ a utle peau lifie qui devient feuleme~t blanche ou jaunatre dans unc varietc, ou acqmen une couleur rouge dans une autre & renfcrme une fubH:ancc fpongieufe iucculen'te d'un got'\t acide' un peu acre' & n~anmoins affe; agrcable. L'ccorce de la noix contient une huile trC$-cll.uiHque & c.res-infla,1n~able ; de iorte <J,U@ ACA l'on re procure des jets de flammc trcs-finguliers & amufimts a voir ' lorfqu'on approche cette noix de Ia flamme d'une bougie. On trouve cet arbre dans les pay~: meridionaux de !'Amerique & de l 'Afie. lj. ( v. f. ) Son bois efr blanc & efl: employe dans les ouvrages de mcnuiferie & de charpence: on fait avec fcs fruits d'excellentes compo· tes, & avec leur fuc exprime & fermente, un vin agreable a boire , dont on retire unc cau-de-vie , & avec lcquel on prepare un bon vinaigte. On donne aux meubles un lufl:rc qui plaic ala vue, avec l'efpcce de gomme qui dccoulc de cet ubre , lorfqu'on fait des incifions a fon 6corce. Obf Il ne nous paro1t point du tout convenable de donner a cec arbre Ie nom d'Anacardium;; & de refufer ce nom au veritable Anacarde du commerce, pour lui donner celui de Scnucarpus, Gomme, I'a fait M. Genre de planre de la divifion des rnonopitales perfomzees ~ & dont la plupart des eij:Hkes, fur-tout ccllcs qui font le plus anciennement connucs, font des hcrbes remarquable5 par un beau feuillage. La fleur a un cal ice de flufieurs feuilles , dont unc tient lieu de lcvre fuperieure de l.:t corolle qui efr tout-a-fait nulle ; une corolle monopetale , irr6guliere ' formant a fa bafe un tube court ' & fe terminant par une levre inferieure auffi grande que le cal ice' plane' large' & a trois divifions obtufes ; c1uatre 6tamines infcrces au tube de la corolle , moins longues que la levre inferieure , dont deux font un peu plus gran des que les aut res, & toutcs chargces d'antheres oblongues, comprimces , droites & velues anterieurcment; un ovaire conique & ovale , fitue au fond de Ia corolle , furmontc par un Hyle filiforme un peu plus long que lcs ctamines, & au fommet duquel e!l: un ftigmate a deux divi!ions. Le fruit efl: une capfule a deux loges ' qui chacune renferme une ou deux femences attachees a la cloilon qui Ia divife. Le caraaere palticulier de ce genre fe tire de la confid6ration du calice , qm eit de plufieurs pieces , & partage comme en deux levrcs , & de cclle de Ia corolle, qui ne forme c1u'une !eule leyre inferieure.
