( Les Arroches , les Erables , &c. ) La derniere Claife renferme les Plantes qui n'ont point de fleurs vi!ibles ou faciles a difiinguer ; de forte que dans ce qui tient lieu des parties de la frudion de ces Plantes, on ile difiingue pas ,les etamines & les piftils ci'une maniere evidente' comme dans les fleurs des Flames des v_ingt-rrois Clafles qui precedent. A plus forte raiftm trouve-t-on des exceptions multipliees dans les gemres oh il y a plus de deux efpeces. & ou, comme dans le Valeriana, le Gentiana, le Polygonum, le Phytolacca, le Lytlzrum, le Cleome, le Rumex, le Laurus, le Jujfitea, le Bombax, &c. &c. Le fyfteme DISCOURS P R E L I M I N A I R E. xxvij incroyable de connoi!fance~> nouvelles & de lumieres qu'il a repandues dans toutes les parties de la Botanique, & meme dans routes les autres branches de l'Hiftoire naturelle, dedommagent amplement des defauts de fon fyfteme ' & font de surs garants que rant que ces belles Sciences ferant culrivees , 1amais le nom de cet illuftre Botanifte ne tombera dans l'oubli. jetteroit dans de perp<huelles erreurs ceux qui ne connoiffant pas d'avance les Flames qui font dans ce cas , fe confieroient aux principes de cet ordre pour etre eclairtk Ainfi , independamment des rapports naturels que le fyfleme de Linne rompt t:otalement dans bien des cas , comme on le voit dans les Graminees , les Liliacees , les Legurnineufes , &c. qu'il divife· & dont il relt!gue les demembremens dans des claffes ou font rapportes d'autres vegetaux qui ne leur reffemblent en aucune maniere ; independamment encore des caraaeres meme de certaines cla!fes qui expofent fans ce!fe a !'equivoque' tel qu'on le remarque dans la Didynami-angiofpermie, dans Ia Monadelphie pentandrie & de-candrie , dans Ia Diadelphie , dans la Polyadelphie , dans la Syngenefie-monogamie, &c. qui renferment des PJantes qu'on pourroit chercher dans des claffcs differenres ; les exceptions nombrcufes & particulieres des efpeces qui , lcs uncs n'ont point le caraB:ere de leur claffe , & les autres font depourvues de celui de leur feetion , achevent de rendre le fyfh~me do~t il s'agit tres-infuffifant & beaucoup moms bon qu'on ne le croit commLmement.
