Show <pn 265> LIBER II. <N=XIII.>Quibus rebus commoti legati, milites ex opere deducunt, oppugnatione desistunt, operibus custodias relinquunt. Induciarum quodam genere misericordia facto, adventus Cæsaris exspectatur. Nullum ex muro, nul- lum a nostris mittitur telum: vt re confecta, omnes curam & diligen- <N=5>tiam remittunt. Cæsar enim per litteras Trebonio magnopere mandaverat, ne per vim oppidum expugnari pateretur; ne gravius permoti milites, & defectionis odio, & contemptione sui, & diutino labore, omnes puberes interficerent. Quod se facturos minabantur. Ægreque tune sunt retenti, quin oppidum irrumperent: graviterque eam rem tulerunt, quod stetisse <N=XIV.>per Trebonium, quominus oppido potirentur, videbatur. At hostes sine side tempus atque occasionem fraudis acdoli quærunt. 1 Interjectisque aliquot diebus, 2 nostris languentibus, atque animo remissis, subito, me- ridiano tempore, quum alius discessisset, alius ex diutino labore in ipsis operibus quieti se dedisset, arma vero omnia reposita contectaque essent; <N=15>3 portis se foras erumpunt; secundo magnoque vento ignem operibus in- ferunt. Hunc sic distulit ventus, vti vno tempore agger, plutei, testudo, turris, tormentaque flammam conciperent, & prius hæc omnia con- sumerentur, quam, quemadmodum accidisset, animadverti posset. Nostri repentina fortuna permoti, arma, quæ possunt, arripiunt. Alii ex castris <N=20>sese incitant. Fit in hostes impetus: sed e muro, sagittis, tormentisque fugientes persequi prohibentur. Illi sub murum se recipiunt; ibique mus- culum turrimque latericiam libere incendunt. Ita multorum mensium labor, hostium perfidia, & vi tempestatis, 4 puncto temporis interiit. Tentaverunt hoc idem Massilienses postero die, candem nacti tempesta- <N=25>tem; majori cum fiducia ad alteram turrem, aggeremque, eruptione pu- gnaverunt; multumque ignem intulerunt. Sed vt superioris temporis contentionem nostri omnem remiserant; ita proximi diei casu admoniti, omnia ad defensionem paraverant. Itaque multis interfectis, reliquos in- <N=XV.>fecta re in oppidum repulerunt. Trebonius ea, quæ sunt amissa, multo <N=30>majore studio militum administrare. & reficere instituit. Nam vbi tantos suos labores & apparatus male cecidisse viderunt, induciisque per scelus violatis, suam virtutem irrisui fore perdoluerunt; quod, vnde agger om- nino comportari posset, nihil erat reliquum, omnibus arboribus longe lateque in finibus Massiliensium excisis, & convectis, aggerem novi ge- <N=35>neris atque inauditum, ex latericiis duobus muris, senum pedum crassi- |
