Quum hic in duas partes flumine divideretur, <N=II.>alteram partem ejus vici Gallis concessit, alteram vacuam ab illis relictam, cohortibus ad hiemandum attribuit: eum locum vallo fossaque munivit. Quum dies hibernorum complures transissent, frumentumque eo com- <N=5>portari jussisset, subito per exploratores certior factus est, ex ea parte vici quam Gallis concesserat, omnes noctu discessisse, montesque qui impen- derent, a maxima multitudine Sedunorum & Veragrorum teneri. Id ali- quot de caussis acciderat, vt subito Galli belli renovandi, legionisque op- primendæ consilium caperent. Primum, quod legionem,1neque eam <N=10>plenissimam, detractis cohortibus duabus, & compluribus sigillatim, qui, commeatus petendi caussa missi erant, absentibus, propter paucita- tem despiciebant: tum etiam, quod propter iniquitatem loci, quum ipsi ex montibus in vallem decurrerent, & tela conjicerent, ne primum qui- dem posse impetum sustineri existimabant. Accedebat, quod suos ab se <N=15>liberos abstractos obsidum nomine dolebant, & Romanos, non solum itinerum caussa, sed etiam perpetuæ possessionis, culmina Alpium occu- pare conari, & ea loca finitimæ provinciæ adjungere, sibi persuasum ha- bebant. His nuntiis acceptis Galba, quum neque opus hibernorum, <N=III.>munitionesque plene essent perfectæ, neque de frumento, reliquoque <N=20>commeatu satis esset provisum, quod deditione facta, obsidibusque acce- ptis, nihil de bello timendum existimaverat: concilio celeriter convocato, sententias exquirere cœpit. Quo in concilio quum tantum repentini pe- riculi præter opinionem accidisset, ac jam omnia fere superiora loca mul- titudine armatorum completa conspicerentur, neque subsidio veniri, ne- <N=25>que commeatus supportari, interclusis itineribus, possent: prope jam des- perata salute, nonnullæ hujusmodi sententiæ dicebantur, vt, impedimen- tis relictis, eruptione facta, iisdem itineribus quibus eo pervenissent, ad salutem contenderent. Majori tamen parti placuit, hoc reservato ad ex- tremum consilio, interim rei eventum experiri, & castra defendere.
