Quum paullo longius a castris processisset: suos ab hostibus premi, atque ægre sustinere, & conferta le- gione ex omnibus partibus tela conjici animadvertit. Nam quod omni ex reliquis partibus demesso frumento, vna pars erat reliqua, suspicati hostes <N=5>huc nostros esse venturos, noctu in silvis delituerant. Tum dispersos, de- positis armis, in metendo occupatos subito adorti, paucis interfectis, re- liquos incertis ordinibus perturbaverant: simul equitatu, atque essedis <N=XXXIII.>circumdederant. Genus hoc est ex essedis pugnæ: primo per omnes partes perequitant, & tela conjiciunt: atque ipso terrore equorum, & <N=10>strepitu rotarum ordines plerumque perturbant: & quum se inter equi- tum turmas insinuavere, ex essedis desiliunt, & pedibus præliantur. Aurigæ interim paullum e prælio excedunt, atque ita se collocant, vt si illi a multitudine hostium premantur, expeditum ad suos receptum habeant. Ita mobilitatem equitum, stabilitatem peditum in præliis præstant: ac <N=15>tantum vsu quotidiano & exercitatione efficiunt, vt in declivi ac præci- piti loco incitatos equos sustinere, & brevi moderari ac flectere, & per temonem percurrere, & in jugo insistere, & inde se in currus citissime <N=XXXIV.>recipere consueverint. 1 Quibus rebus perturbatis nostris novitate pu- gnæ, tempore opportunissimo Cæsar auxilium tulit: namque ejus adventu <N=20>hostes constiterunt, nostri ex timore se receperunt. Quo facto ad laces- sendum hostem, & committendum prælium, alienum esse tempus arbi- tratus, suo se loco continuit, & brevi tempore intermisso, in castra legio- nes reduxit. Dum hæc geruntur, nostris omnibus occupatis, qui erant in agris reliqui, discesserunt. Secutæ sunt continuos dies complures tem- <N=25>pestates, quæ & nostros in castris continerent, & hostem a pugna prohi- berent. Interim barbari nuntios in omnes partes dimiserunt, paucitatemq; nostrorum militum suis prædicaverunt: & quanta prædæ faciendæ, atque in perpetuum sui liberandi facultas daretur, si Romanos castris expulissent, demonstraverunt. His rebus celeriter magna multitudine peditatus equi- <N=XXXV.>tatusque coacta, ad castra venerunt. Cæsar etsi idem quod superioribus diebus acciderat, fore videbat, vt si essent hostes pulsi, celeritate pericu- lum effugerent: tamen nactus equites circiter XXX, quos Comius Atrebas, de quo ante dictum est, secum transportaverat, legiones in acie pro castris constituit. Commisso prælio, diutius nostrorum militum impetum hostes <N=35>ferre non potuerunt, ac terga verterunt: quos tanto spatio secuti, quan- tum cursu & viribus efficere potuerunt, complures ex iis occiderunt: deinde <N=XXXVI.>omnibus longe lateque ædificiis incensis, se in castra receperunt.
