Show <pn 303> LIBER III. equitibus, qui eam partem oræ maritimæ asservabant, circiter CD, qui- que eos armati ex præsidio secuti sunt, se defenderunt: & nonnullis eo- <N=XXIX.>rum interfectis, incolumes ad nostros sese receperunt. Quo facto, conventus civium Romanorum qui Lissum obtinebat, quod oppidum iis <N=5>antea Cæsar attribuerat, muniendumque curauerat, Antonium recepit, omnibusque rebus juvit. Otacilius sibi timens, oppido fugit, & ad Pom- peium pervenit. 1 Ex omnibus copiis Antonius, quarum erat summa, veteranorum III legionum, vniusque tironum, & equitum DCCC, ple- rasque naves in Italiam remittit, ad reliquos milites equitesque transpor- <N=10>tandos: 2 pontones, quod est genus navium Gallicarum, Lissi reliquit; hoc consilio, vt, fi forte Pompeius vacuam existimans Italiam eo trans- jecisset exercitum, quæ opinio erat edita in vulgus, aliquam Cæsar ad insequendum facultatem haberet: nuntiosque ad eum celeriter mittit, quibus regionibus exercitum exposuisset, & quid militum transvexisset. <N=XXX.>Hæc eodem fere tempore Cæsar atque Pompeius cognoscunt. Nam præ- tervectas Apolloniam Dyrrhachiumque naves viderant: ipsi iter secun- dum eas terra direxerant: sed quo essent eæ delatæ, primis diebus igno- rabant: cognitaque re, diversa sibi ambo consilia capiunt; Cæsar, vt quamprimum se cum Antonio conjungeret; Pompeius, vt venientibus in <N=20>itinere se opponeret, &, si imprudentes ex insidiis adoriri posset. Eo- demque die vterque eorum 3 ex castris stativis a flumine Apso exercitum educunt: Pompeius clam & noctu, Cæsar palam atque interdiu. Sed Cæsari circuitu majore iter erat longius, adverso flumine, vt vado trans- ire posset. Pompeius, quia expedito itinere flumen ei transeundum non <N=25>erat, magnis itineribus ad Antonium contendit; atque, vbi eum appro- pinquare cognovit, idoneum locum nactus ibi copias collocavit: suosque omnes castris continuit, ignesque fieri prohibuit; quo occultior esset ejus adventus. Hæc ad Antonium statim per Græcos deferuntur. Ille missis ad Cæsarem nuntiis vnum diem sese castris tenuit. Altero die ad eum <N=30>pervenit Cæsar. Cujus adventu cognito Pompeius, ne duobus circum clauderetur exercitibus, ex eo loco discedit: omnibusque copiis ad 4 Aspa- ragium Dyrrhachinorum pervenit, atque ibi idoneo loco castra ponit. His |
