Complures interim legationes Pharnaces ad Domitium mittit, quæ de pace agerent, regiaque munera Domitio ferrent. Ea constanter omnia aspernabatur: nec sibi quidquam fore antiquius, quam dignita- <N=5>tem populi Romani & regna sociorum recuperare, legatis respondebat. Magnis & continuis itineribus confectis, quum adventaret 1 Nicopolim, quod oppidum in Armenia minore positum est, plano ipsum loco, mon- tibus tamen altis ab duobus lateribus objectis, satis magno intervallo ab oppido remotis, castra posuit longe a Nicopoli circiter millia passuum <N=10>VII. Quibus ex castris, quum locus angustus atque impeditus esset trans- eundus, Pharnaces in insidiis delectos pedites omnesque pene disposuit equites. Magnam autem multitudinem pecoris intra eas fauces dissipari jussit; paganosque & oppidanos in iis locis obversari: vt, si amicus Do- mitius eas angustias transiret, nihil de insidiis suspicaretur, quum in agris <N=15>& pecora & homines animadverteret versari, tamquam amicorum adven- tu: sin vero vt in hostium fines veniret, præda diripienda milites dissi- <N=XXXVII.>parentur, dispersique cæderentur. Hæc quum administraret, nunquam tamen intermittebat legatos de pace atque amicitia mittere ad Domitium: quum hoc ipso crederet eum facilius decipi posse. At contra spes pacis <N=20>Domitio in iisdem castris morandi attulit caussam. Ita Pharnaces, amissa proximi temporis occasione, veritus, ne cognoscerentur insidiæ, suos in castra revocavit. Domitius postero die propius Nicopolim accessit, a ca- straque oppido contulit. Quæ dum muniunt nostri, Pharnaces aciem instruxit suo more atque instituto. In fronte enim, simplici directa acie, <N=25>cornua trinis firmabantur subsidiis. Eadem ratione hæc media colloca- bantur acie, duobus dextra sinistraque intervallis, simplicibus ordinibus instructis. Perfecit incœptum castrorum opus Domitius, parte copiarum <N=XXXVIII.>pro vallo instructa. Proxima nocte Pharnaces, interceptis tabellariis, qui de Alexandrinis rebus litteras ad Domitium ferebant, cognoscit Cæ- <N=30>sarem magno in periculo versari, slagitarique a Domitio, vt quampri- mum sibi subsidia mitteret, propiusque ipse Alexandriam per Syriam ac- cederet.
